Maybe you have seen a dual WAN router advertised and you wonder what they are and why you would need to consider using one. What is a dual WAN router? If we break it down it is easy to understand. The dual WAN description means that it provides for two Wide Area Network (WAN) connections. This means that it can have two connections to the internet at the same time. This dual connection may be utilized in different ways.

In some instances, like in some businesses, the dual WAN connection provides a fail-safe redundancy. If one connection fails, the other will continue to provide an internet connection. In other situations, it may be used to increase overall bandwidth. The router part of the unit provides a connection for local computers to the each other and the WAN. Most dual WAN routers come with some similar features. A firewall of some type is included in most of the products offered in this line. Most units will also provide load balancing between the dual WAN ports. The efficiency and effectiveness of each individual unit's load balancing may vary. Consult the specifications for the actual data and read reviews of the real world performance.

You will find that they provide for VPN (Virtual Private Network) connections. The number and type of VPNs does vary across different brands and models. If VPN connections are an important feature for your network, make sure that the dual WAN router you choose supports your protocol and the number of connections you will need to make. Some of the differences among the dual WAN router choices are number of LAN ports on the router.

For example, the Linksys Cisco RV082 and the SMB Broadband Router TL-R4299G have eight LAN ports but Syswan Technologies Duolinks SW24 and TW100-BRV324 only have four LAN ports. You can find others like the AXIMCom PG-216NV or Draytek Vigor 2920N that have wireless LAN capability in addition to the wired LAN ports and the dual WAN.  You can see why with the features that a dual WAN router has, it may be an important part of many businesses, both small and large, and an increasing number of personal network setups.
